Montessori
is a classic method of education developed by Dr.
Maria Montessori, Italy's first female physician. It is
logically based both on the child's natural style of learning
and on a deep respect for the tremendous potential innate
in the child.
The Montessori
classroom is a fully functioning community of children
originally called Casa dei Bambini (Children's House), everything
is carefully designed for the important work of small hands.
In 2003,
the UMS pre-school program for ages 2-6 moved to a state-of-the-art
building (#8 on the Ursuline Campus) designed specifically
to enhance the Montessori teaching and learning philosophy.
The building is also environmentally
friendly, using solar and geothermal energies.
The Ursuline
Montessori School is in voluntary compliance with the
Kentucky Department of Education, and is licensed by the Cabinet
for Human Resources.

Parental
involvement is highly encouraged at UMS from participating
in the Parent Association to reading a story during an informal
site visit, parents support our programs in countless ways.
Focusing
on science, art, language, math, social studies, music, practical
life, and critical thinking, areas of our classrooms are arranged
for children to choose activities and move about naturally.
Children
at UMS are provided with opportunities to experience age-appropriate
levels of freedom, responsibility and leadership.
Certified
Montessori teachers guide the activities in each classroom
where adult to child ratios are a maximum of 1 to 12. For our 2 year olds, the adult to child ratio is 1 to 10 or less.
