1858

In 1858, a request to the
Ursuline Sisters of Germany came from Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Teachers
were needed for the German immigrant children at St. Martins
school. Three young Ursulines answered the request, traveling to Louisville
that year. By 1859, they had established Ursuline Academy at the corner
of Shelby and Chestnut streets. |

In 1864, the Sisters incorporated
the Ursuline Society
and Academy of Education. |

1870
|
|
In the 1870s, the growing
number of sisters, students and boarders necessitated more spacious
facilities, so the community purchased property for the sisters on
Workhouse Road (later known as the Lexington Road campus). |

1877

|
In October of 1877, classes
began in an existing farmhouse, and Sacred Heart Academy was opened
for grades 1 through 12. |
