LOUISVILLE, KY (January 2009) - Alumni of Sacred Heart Model School are invited to an all-class Alumni Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 25 beginning with Mass at 11:30 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel, bldg. 10 on the Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Rd. The Alumnus of the Year award will be presented to major league baseball pitcher Paul Byrd for his outstanding professional achievements and community service at an awards ceremony and brunch following Mass.
Also being honored during the alumni celebration for their years of dedication to Sacred Heart Model School will be past faculty members Laura Hansen and Sr. Mary Ann Huber, OSU (Sr. Dorothea).
Byrd is a 1984 graduate of Sacred Heart Model School and a 1988 graduate of St. Xavier. He completed his undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University where he pitched for the Tigers and helped the team win the College World Series in 1991. Over the past 12 years Byrd has played for the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox. During his 1999 season with the Phillies, Byrd was selected to play in the All Star Game. Byrd is known for his unique pitching style and specialty pitches.
In addition to his accomplishments on the pitching mound, Byrd has written a book, Free Byrd: The Power of a Liberated Life. The book chronicles the ups and downs Byrd has faced on and off the field and how his faith and relationship with God has grown due to these challenges and triumphs.
