Sacred Heart Academy Apple Tournament celebrates 35 years

LOUISVILLE, KY (July 2007) - Sacred Heart Academy will host the 35th annual Apple Tournament Aug. 11 to 17 on the athletic fields at Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Rd. Legendary SHA coach Bunny Dougherty organized the first Apple Tournament in 1973 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Constance Applebee, who brought field hockey to the United State from England in the early 1900s.

Sacred Heart Academy alumnae field hockey players are invited to attend the opening varsity field hockey game on Saturday, August 11 at 1:30 p.m. between SHA and Male High School. SHA field hockey alumnae will be honored during a halftime celebration and will receive a special 35th anniversary souvenir. Admission is free for all SHA alumnae.

On Friday, August 17 at 6:45 p.m. alumnae from the 1973 Kentucky Country Day and Collegiate High School teams will be honored during the halftime of the championship varsity game. KCD beat Collegiate in the finals of the first Apple Tournament championship game in 1973.

The Apple tournament has grown to be the largest fall field hockey tournament in the Louisville area and now includes freshman, junior varsity and varsity championship games. Sacred Heart Academy has won the varsity championship 11 times.
