Louisville Youth Choir to perform with Global Rhythms World Music Ensemble

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 2008) - Over 200 artists will perform with the Global Rhythms World Music Ensemble on April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Brown Theatre when the ensemble’s 10th anniversary concert series showcases music and dance from around the world. The Louisville Youth Choir will be a featured guest artist.

Miami University’s Global Rhythms, the nation's largest world music ensemble, features over 90 vocalists and unites cultures from all around the world by presenting Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Indian, African, Brazilian, Latin, Australian and Western music and dance. The concert will feature several guest artists including renowned cellist Pansy Chang, trombonist Jaime Morales Matos, keyboardist Jay Hernly and percussionists John Marque and PR Chandy. Vocalists Aaron Bishara and Kristina Wood will combine with 15-year-old female Indian prodigy, Rajna Swaminathan, a 10- member all-star drum line led by Scott Padden and hip-hop dancers. Music from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams will be featured with Bollywood-style dancing choreographed by Tami Robinson.

Miami University’s Ethan Sperry will conduct several selections along with Charlotte Lofllin and Kristina Wood. Indian Ragas on the saxophone by Siddharth and Shyam from India as well as music of Northern India on the steel pan and tabla will also be featured.

Global Rhythms was founded in 1997 at Miami University by alumnus, master percussionist and artistic director Srinivas Krishnan. Its mission is to perform ethnic music from non-western cultures using Western instruments. The group is open to all students at Miami University with an interest in world music.

The Louisville Youth Choir, artists in residence at Ursuline School for the Performing Arts, is a nonprofit arts organization and was founded in 1967. Annually, LYC draws nearly 100 youth from throughout the metropolitan area who have a passion for singing. Its musical repertoire includes many styles and cultures, including major classics and modern works, often performed with soloists and orchestras. In July 2007, LYC became artists in residence at Ursuline School for the Performing Arts.
