The Legend of Pocahontas is filled with Native American lore and is true to the original legend. Princess Pocahontas is the daughter of the powerful Algonquin Chief Powhatan. Her name means “She-Who-Likes-To-Be-Mischievous,” and it fits her well! The princess enjoys playing tricks and games, especially in the forest with her friends Wolf, Raven and Squirrel. She also makes friends with the English settlers in the struggling community of Jamestown. In a thrilling scene, Pocahontas saves the life of Captain James Smith and finds a way for the Indians and the settlers to live in harmony and friendship. The play, by Vera Morris, is an entertaining page from our country’s history and is suitable for children of all ages.
Twenty-four children, ages 11 to 13, from 10 area elementary and middle schools make up the cast. The director is Gerry Kean. Abby Ruiz Brown is assistant director; Robert Green is stage manager and Kirk Kirchner is technical assistan.

Ursuline School for the Performing Arts (USPA), a member of Ursuline Campus Schools, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, is fully-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and provides opportunities for students of all ages who wish to pursue careers in the performing and visual arts or who simply want to enrich their lives through music, dance, drama or the visual arts. USPA programs are open to the public, complement those offered by other schools on campus, and encourage students to explore meanings, associations and interpretations of their encounters with the arts. In addition, arts integration classes taught by USPA faculty during the school day are an important component of the educational offerings of the other four Ursuline Campus schools. In July 2007, the distinguished Louisville Youth Choir became artists in residence at USPA. www.ucschools.com/uspa
